Semp is a project to create a game similar to Stars! as a free open source game. This includes full multiplayer capabilities as well as AI.

Stars! went on hiatus. A new version of Stars! known as "Stars! Supernova Genesis" was in the works. However, it still has not been released, and does not appear that it will be released in the near future.

The older version of Stars! (1.x and 2.x) were available on windows only (unless you wanted to run it on wine, which was possible, but suboptimal) and closed source. Semp aims to fix both these problems by creating a 'highly-portable' open source library to do any dirty work with a gtk (and maybe qt later) client for the player. It's entirely possible to link closed/commercial programs with this library, giving a high degree of flexibility on the usage of the library.
